Not many people can say they got given access backstage to The Oscars. Colly can, and she was everywhere……in the shape of 3 raw, vegan, delectable snacks sitting snug in a cute little tube called Soma Bites. I was stoked to see these little babies in Woolies! Then Colly comes along to say they’re headed into the mouths of Hollywood stars? Talk about jumping from strength to strength. Soma Bites are taking over the world, one healthy, delicious morsel at a time! And I am so thrilled for them!
So what are they? They’re organic, raw, made from nuts, seeds and fruits, and packed full of goodness. The creators? The lovely Colly and her husband Riky. A dynamite duo you’ll be seeing around for years to come.
So snuggle up, grab a bite to eat (a Soma Bite perhaps?) and get to know the beautiful Colly a little better…
Happy Friday Night In!
Please share a little about yourself:
Alongside my husband, I am the co-founder and owner of Soma Organics. We launched the Soma Bites, a 100% certified organic bite size superfood snack in late 2012. The product grew rapidly in the first year of business with over 200 independent stockists and Woolworths supermarkets in Australia. We have since launched in Asia and about to release another range of products.
I am also 3 weeks away from completing a Bachelor of Health Science in Psychology and Health Promotion working towards a Health Psychology degree.
How did your business come about?
I’ve always been health-minded and lived a well-rounded healthy lifestyle but the true catalyst for starting the business occurred after I fell pregnant. As every mother understands, it is an honour to bring life into the world. Your life suddenly becomes far more important than you had ever perceived. This is where my awareness towards nurturing my body with wholesome and clean foods grew. I began to re-educate myself in this area and during this process I noticed a huge gap for certified organic snack foods on the market.
Where did ‘Soma’ come from?
The name came as I was studying anatomy and physiology in my nutrition unit at the university. The Soma is the cell body (as is greek for ‘body) and I thought the name represented the foundations of our company beautifully.
The most rewarding part of your job?
There are so many aspects. Receiving emails and phone calls from happy customers, seeing the product that we created from scratch in shelves around Australia, seeing images of the product backstage at this year’s Oscars in L.A. was pretty amazing too! All in all, I believe it’s the sense of reward and achievement. I’m very proud at how far we’ve come in the short space of time.
What haven’t you done yet that you wish you could?
Purchase a house in Europe where we can live 6 months of the year.
Favourite place in the world?
As long as I’m with my family in the sunshine, I’m happy. Oh ok, anywhere in the Greek Isles, anywhere on the Côte d’Azur or Ibiza would be nice too 😉
If you were a spice, which would you be?
Cardamon. You don’t know it’s there, but it makes a huge difference to the dish.
5 things you can’t live without?
Sunshine, happy and healthy family, a pair of runners, a wi-fi connection and my Marc Jacobs reading glasses.
If you could choose to eat anything in the world for your next meal, what would it be?
What was for breakfast?
Coffee w/almond milk and ‘pancakes’ with my daughter (mix a squashed banana, organic eggs, cinnamon, dash of vanilla into a pan with coconut oil). We love this – in fact, what was saved for the weekend has now become a weekday ritual! Lucky it’s quick…
How would you classify your eating style?
Healthy, mindful, balanced and in tune with my own body.
Your favourite way to stay active?
My morning begins with exercise – always. I am a keen runner and usually, strive for 40km a week. This is my form of meditation. Every keen runner will understand the bliss of the runner high, which is why I love running and it works well for me. I mix this up with reformer Pilates, Barre classes and resistance band training on alternate days.
What’s next for Soma Organics?
We have recently launched in Asia, which has opened up a world of opportunity for our company. We are also in a huge product development phase and busy creating fantastic, healthy and organic products ready for you all.
Your best advice for living a wholesome, healthy lifestyle?
Balance, nourishment and love.
