How good do fresh hot cross buns smell? Seriously!
They’re right up there in my top 3 with freshly baked white bread and buttery croissants for their enticing scent. They’re one of my most missed foods since going gluten free so many years ago, so I went and found the best recipes out there for us to enjoy!
While I’d usually get my fix by creating my own or getting a couple from my local gluten free cafe……I’m attempting to be in lockdown to create some super cool online nutrition programs for you guys AND the local cafe shut down unexpectedly, just last month!
I can’t find any other gluten free hot cross bun stockists around the Sunshine Coast (if you know of one, please get in touch!). So, my predicament has led me on a digital quest to find the best Hot Cross Buns around the web.
Requirements were as follows:
- Gluten free
- Relatively easy to make
- Ingredients as natural as possible
- Works with non-dairy milks
Let me know which one you make and how you go in the comments.
Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns
An amazing recipe if you’re ok with xanthan gum (may not be ideal for sensitive guts, but it gives it that super soft ‘gluten’-like texture). There’s also a little bit of caster sugar in there too.
Check it out at Food To Love by Women’s Weekly here!
Pull-Apart Hot Cross Bun
Yep, blatant plug of my recipe in here too, but you know what? They were damn good, even if I do say so myself! Haha! Check it out here (there’s even a double choc chunk version).
Caramel Macadamia Hot Cross Buns
A spare bag of macadamia nut flour got Mummymade.it inspired to make a more decadent take on the usual Easter muffin. Take a look at the recipe here!
Raw Hot Cross Buns
So super duper cute and easy to make, enjoy making these with the littlies thanks to Paleo with Mrs P!
Paleo Hot Cross Buns
Are they muffins or buns? If you’re not that skilled in the kitchen, you don’t need to fiddle with making dough balls, just pop the mix into a muffin pan, and hey presto! Muffin buns! Muffuns?Haha, that’ll do! Check them out here at The Merrymaker Sisters!
Hot Cross Bun Inspired Recipes
Ok, so it can be a little challenging coming up with the perfect healthy gluten free hot cross bun (HCB). They just don’t match 100%.
So if nothing but the absolute original will do, and for dietary reasons, you simply can’t have them… Try these HCB-inspired recipes instead!
Similar in taste but without having to face the heartbreak of previous traditional HCB expectations.
Cinnamon, Ginger, Raisin Pancakes
Irena took the best bits of the buns and turned them into one of the best breakfast treats – pancakes! Get the recipe at Eat Drink Paleo.
Hot Cross Bun Breakfast Cake
Yes, of course you can eat cake for breakfast – it’s Easter! 🙂 And hey, it’s better than that chocolate egg 😉 Use quinoa flakes not oats to keep this gluten free. Your morning is sorted with Kobi Steedman.
