Friday night in with Debbie Spellman from Detox Your Mind

I have known Debbie for a little while now, and every single time I meet up with her, I am inspired and totally motivated to kick some serious goals and achieve what I want to achieve. Debbie is a living, breathing example of her business and how when you put your mind to it, you really can achieve anything. I totally adore her.

So, it's that time of the week.

Relax, unwind and enjoy getting to know this amazing woman a little more.

A Body Beauty Q+A with Debbie...

Share a little about yourself

I’m Debbie :) I live in the beautiful Eastern Suburbs of Sydney with my hubby (recently married and still in newly wed bliss) and furry baby, Jed. I am incredibly passionate about living a fulfilling, limitless lifestyle and being the best person I can be to this world.

How did your business come about?

I believe our biggest weaknesses become our greatest strengths. I experienced an emotional breakdown at age 28 after I left what I thought was my dream career. Everything in my life disappeared (except my man…bless him) and I found myself asking, ‘Who am I?’. Who was I without the swanky business title, global company, designer dresses and socialite lifestyle? It was a question I could not answer and sparked a two-year journey into my mind, my past and myself.

What I discovered was that the most negative experiences in my life were due to my lack of self-worth. I stayed in a 7 year relationship for far too long because I was scared to leave, I was too afraid to walk away from my previous company out of fear; fear of rejection and what other would think. I recognised my worse moments arose when I compromised myself for others.

It went deeper…I had identified my lack of self-worth ran my life from the moment I could remember. From my teenage years where I never thought I was skinny enough or pretty enough to attract the boys, through my twenties where not only did I not have a voice, I put my value and worth on what other people thought of me. Whether they like me or accepted me determined whether or not I felt good enough. I always wanted to please people so they would like me and therefore lived by everyone else’s expectations. No wonder I had no freakin’ idea who I was!

It was after this realization that my business took a turn – I went from being a Mind Detox Therapist working with anyone to creating a deeply intensive signature program for women who had or were experiencing those things I struggled with. My work is designed around the path I walked in order to find myself, my purpose and my peace of mind.

The most rewarding part of your job?

Oh, every day! The most rewarding part is when a woman has a life-changing breakthrough. Whether she is experiencing binge eating and can’t stop, has compromised herself all her life and now doesn’t know who she is or she has a deep ingrained belief or thought pattern which has held her back for years…it’s in that moment when we discover the repressed memory in childhood where it all began and the light bulb goes off in her mind as to how that one event has shaped the person she is today – and now she is ready to let it go. That is gold dust – so precious, so beautiful and so profound - I get goose bumps thinking about it.

What haven’t you done yet that you wish you could?

Take on the world. It’s happening :)

Favourite place in the world?

Believe it or not, it’s in our home country. Noosa.

I have travelled a great deal and seen some of the most beautiful places on earth and yet nothing comes close to the way Noosa makes me feel. It’s home.

If you were a spice, which would you be?

Oohh what a great question! I would be Star Anise. It’s a warm and moving herb used to assist in relieving cold-stagnation (in Chinese medicine). With warmth and love I move women from feeling stagnant and dull into a fulfilling and beautiful way of being.

5 things you can’t live without?

 1. My family; my hubby and furry baby and my Mum, Dad and sisters. I love them all from the deepest part of my heart and I could not live without them.

2. The beautiful women in my life; friends, fellow female entrepreneurs, The Belles women’s social group I run – They are all such an important part of my life. Women truly rock!

3. My laptop. It contains my life’s purpose. I can work from anywhere and for that I am so grateful.

4. Simplicity. From my home to my lifestyle. I live with simple style. No clutter, no unnecessary items, no toxic things (or people) – just everything I adore.

5. Organic and healthy food. Being in Bondi Junction I am a stroll away from some of the best organic, paleo, wholefood and raw cafes. I am truly spoilt in my everyday lifestyle. When I travelled recently to South Australia I noticed how much I missed my morning green smoothie, afternoon fresh coconut break and raw salads.

If you could choose to eat anything in the world for your next meal, what would it be?

Sushi. I take myself for a solo sushi date at least once a week up the road to my local. The chef knows just what I want and it’s just me and my raw fish. I love it!

What was for breakfast?

Green Smoothie Concoction (yes, it is a serious concoction of ingredients, I have it every morning)

How would you classify your eating style?

I love presentation. I savour each bite. I see eating as a nourishing ritual for my mind and body and I don’t think twice about spending money on quality.

Your favourite way to stay active?

Pilates mainly. I also love doing a training session with my hubby (he is a Personal Trainer) and I find I get results fast because he doesn’t let me slack off (eek). I also take my dog for a walk one to two times per day.

Your best advice for living a wholesome, healthy lifestyle?

Do what makes you feel good! Listen to your body and notice what energises you and drains you. Give up all the things that don’t make you feel good mind, body and soul – and do more of what does! It’s that simple.
