Friday Night In with Nadine from Real Food Connection
I had heard about Real Food Connection a little while ago, but a busy schedule and a continual need to bulk cook and prep for my partner (who is a bottomless pit) had them return to the front of my memory. I hunted them down again, spoke to Nadine, the owner, and had my first taste of their seriously tasty meals!
Firstly, they arrive at your door fresh, never frozen! They are portioned, without making you say "is that it?!!", and they are packed with flavour! If anything, the portions were a little on the bigger side! Plus, all their meals are paleo. Perfect for those with a desire for more whole foods, a need for food intolerance friendly dishes and those who just love the convenience of fresh, wholesome food that tastes homemade! The meats were soft and tender, and the vegetables were cooked really well.
They are based in Camperdown where they have their paleo cafe. You can take a look at the menu here. And see the dishes I tried after the Q+A!
But for now, learn a little more about this lovely lady and read how it all came about!
Share a little about yourself
My family moved from London to Sydney when I was five years old and my earliest memory of Sydney was standing at the south end of Bondi Beach watching the huge surf for the first time. I remember standing there in awe. I became hooked to the ocean, the outdoors and food. My dad actually co-owned a French patisserie in Bondi so I worked there every day after school until I was 12... Not the best introduction to a healthy life but saying that we didn’t have that stuff at home – desert after dinner, soft drinks, sweets etc were never around or a part of our household. The first time I tried McDonalds was when I was 6 and I didn’t like it! Mum always cooked fresh and I remember lots of colour and flavour in our foods. I still love my mums cooking.
How did your business come about?
I am always busy, I always have been. Whether it’s being a good wife, mum, friend, daughter, sister, colleague or employee, renovating something, organising something, cooking something I’ve always got loads on. So basically the business idea came about because of frustration. I’d been effectively following Paleo for a while and I started to question - Why can’t I get decent food at a reasonable price when I need it?
The most rewarding part of your job?
I love interacting with people, so that in its self is rewarding. It’s especially rewarding when customers tell us that are closer to reaching their health goals because we’ve made eating healthy that little bit easier for them.
What haven’t you done yet that you wish you could?
Swim with the great white shark
Favorite place in the world?
Vava’u in Tongo. I’ve been there a couple of times now to swim with whales. It’s such an amazing place, so simple and has everything you need and nothing more, if that makes sense.
If you were a spice, which would you be?
Really?!? Hmmm… maybe paprika… I like a smoky paprika flavour I guess… ohh Mint! No not mint that’s a herb… great for cocktails… Mmmm cocktails… I regress, yep paprika, I’ll go with that.
5 things you can’t live without?
My family, my dog, my friends, sunshine and food
If you could choose to eat anything in the world for your next meal, what would it be?
Easy, I’d be in the Solomon Islands having some freshly caught fish, sashimi all the way.
What was for breakfast?
I was a bit rushed today… coffee, half an avocado and some ham
How would you classify your eating style?
Paleo + dairy. LOADS of vegetables.
Your favourite way to stay active?
Running around after my 5 month old! It’s 24/7 and he’s so much fun. And scuba diving, I’d do that every day if I could! How I actually stay active – crossfit, swimming and pilates - when I have time!
Your best advice for living a wholesome, healthy lifestyle?
Attitude. Have a good one towards your health and your self.
How can women find you?
I usually hang out at our Café and love having visitors!
