Friday Night In with Michaela and Lucy from Feed Me Real Food Co

Michaela and Lucy get it. They know you want to eat healthy, look after your body, and feel amazing. But they also know you're busy, you're tired, and some days you just want to eat take-away despite your desire to eat well.

Using free-range, grass-fed, naturally raised meat and poultry, the women behind Feed Me Real Food Co have developed a seasonal menu that is paleo and food intolerance friendly.  Their menu always contains no gluten, grains, dairy, legumes, refined sugar, soy, or chemicals/pesticides.

So snuggle up, it's a chilly one, and get to learn a little more about the brains behind this great delivery service. At the end, there's a little review of their meals from me too!


Please share a little about yourselves

Lucy – I am a huge food geek and nutrition and health enthusiast! I have been studying Nutritional Medicine for the past couple of years, but I’m taking a break while we grow Feed Me!

Michaela – Born and bred Sydney girl, a former marketer and designer, full-time food lover! My real food journey started in 2008 when I discovered I was gluten intolerant. I adopted a paleo way of eating shortly after and haven’t looked back.


How did your business come about?

Two paleo food nerds, one a graphic designer/social media geek, and the other a Nutrition student, both live and love real food and the lifestyle that goes with it. We realised that many people want to eat well but just don’t have the time or know what or how to cook.  So we wanted to share it all and make it easier for people and decided to join forces to create Feed Me!


The most rewarding part of your job?

Lucy – To be able to do something that absolutely interests me and that I love. It doesn’t really feel like a job, and to be able to share it with others makes it even more worthwhile.

Michaela – educating and exciting the public about making better food choices, and of course the product testing!!


What haven’t you done yet that you wish you could?

Lucy – Eat my way around South East Asia!

Michaela – Ditto, actually, that sounds great! Or participate in the Amazing Race. I reckon I’d win!


Favourite place in the world?

Lucy – Can I have two??!! Cape Town, South Africa – culture, diversity, people, food and gorgeous beaches and mountains in one city! The other would be the North Shore of Oahu – pristine beaches, chilled out vibe, gorgeous surroundings, friendly people. Love it.

Michaela – Tough! I love Utrecht in Holland. It’s a cute little city to the south with lots of history, culture, cafes and shops and the people are lovely! You can take a canoe around the canals… Think Amsterdam but far less trashy!


If you were a spice, which would you be?

Lucy – Turmeric – it’s bright, adds lovely colour and flavour to foods and has amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well as many other great health benefits. I incorporate it into my diet as much as I can and love to sprinkle a little ground turmeric on my eggs or grate fresh turmeric and fresh ginger to make tea.

Michaela – Mustard! I can be mild and subtle or I can knock your socks off hahah!


5 things you can’t live without?

Lucy – No surpises here; they are mostly food related! Coconut oil, butter, 85% (or darker) dark chocolate, the ability to travel the world, the amazing people in my life.

Michaela – My smartphone (#geek), dark chocolate, coffee, sunshine and salt water.


If you could choose to eat anything in the world for your next meal, what would it be?

Lucy – Lamb chops with anything green cooked in and topped with lots of butter! And maybe some avocado on the side! Yum!

Michaela – I’d actually have a French croissant with jam and cream. I can’t eat those because of my gluten intolerance… but you said anything ;)

What was for breakfast?

Lucy – leftover Pork and veal bolognaise with asparagus and kale. Yes, I eat “dinner” food for breakfast!!

Michaela – Ha! and I have breakfast food for dinner! Bacon, scrambled eggs, half an avo, sauerkraut and spinach, with a coconut milk coffee.


How would you classify your eating style?

Lucy – I live and follow a “Paleo” approach which has become more of a way of eating, a philosophy and a lifestyle than a diet. I prefer to think of it as finding the best quality, ethically produced and sustainably raised and grown food sources, as nutrient dense and close to nature as possible, removing processed foods, inflammatory foods and finding what works for my body. The way I eat is ridiculously delicious and sometimes it’s hard to resist a yummy paleo treat! J

Michaela – Ditto, Lucy. I’m Paleo at least 90% of the time. I break the rules for the odd bowl of rice, gluten free pizza or a cocktail, but not too often. My downfall is the paleo-fied snacks… I’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth.


Your favourite way to stay active?

Lucy – Functional fitness, walking, swimming and finding fun ways to play, like frisbee or catch in the park.

Michaela –Yoga, stand up paddle boarding and I’m hoping to take up Acrobatics classes soon. Used to be a Gymnast in high school and I really miss it.


What is your favourite dish on the current Feed Me Real Food Co menu?

Lucy – Chicken thighs wrapped in bacon! Need I say more?! :)

Michaela – The slow cooked balsamic beef gets me every time!


Your best advice for living a wholesome, healthy lifestyle?

Lucy –

Care about what you put in your body and on your skin. Don’t stress out too much about it though as this can negate the otherwise beneficial effects of your efforts.

Surround yourself with like-minded people who are supportive of and understand you. People who you can relate to and bring out the best in you.

Make time for quality sleep, social interaction and move frequently!

Michaela – Sleep well, eat clean and don’t get angry/stressed. Getting angry or stressed about a situation will NEVER improve, fix or undo what has happened. You’ll think clearer and feel better mentally and physically if you choose NOT to get upset about it.

I was very lucky and grateful to be given a selection of their meals to taste test and analyse for you. Sydney-siders, you won't be disappointed! It's a great serve size for men and active women, the options I had contained at least 2 serves of vegetables, and the flavour was incredibly delicious!! This is real food, with home-style flavours, cooked with care.  Even after the 3 minute microwave hit, it still tasted great and wasn't dry at all!  

I loved the variety of re-heating instructions and the packaging. Lucy and Michaela have really done an amazing job. The lovely coconut cups and Brazil bites were simply a treat too!

For those who follow the Whole 30 paleo diet - all their meals are compliant. 

For everybody else, the meals are simply delicious and nourishing. Take a look!
