Eating fat makes us stupid?
Fat makes you stupid?
Here's why you shouldn't freak out over this article doing the rounds.
1. A moderate fat intake from a variety of sources is beneficial for your body in a number of ways!
2. I've always recommended cutting out junk food and trans fats, as do all health professionals and organisations that I know. Evidence consistently supports this, so that's a given that we shouldn't be eating these much at all.
3. The study was conducted on mice - it's insightful, but not the best evidence to make any assumptions for us humans.
4. Most importantly - the study they are referring to examined the amounts of fat stored in the bodies of the mice i.e adipose tissue. Not the amount of fat they consumed. Overweight and obesity is typically due to overconsumption of foods, lack of exercise and a poor diet. The study showed the more fat stores and inflammation the mice had, the more their brain function was reduced. Once the fat was removed - like mice 'liposuction' or via exercise, their inflammation decreased and brain function improved.
This doesn't mean eating fat is bad, it shows that potentially, being overweight and having excessively large fat stores can slow our brains down. Eat your fats, from a variety of sources, cut the junk, and don't over do it at meal times.
Basically the bottom line to the research is that maintaining a healthy weight will help keep your brain healthy too.
