Friday Night In With The Merrymaker Sisters (+ Paleo Recipe!)
With an incredible zest for life, a passion for helping others find health, and a recipe repertoire to convince even the fussiest eaters to eat a more wholefood based diet - I simply had to introduce the merrymaker sisters to you all!
I first found them online via Instagram where their pictures of sweet healthy treats lured me in! They eat a paleo-style diet and it's definitely not a meat fest on their feeds. Spend your Friday night in learning more about Carla and Emma, and then get ready to try their delicious smoothie for breakfast tomorrow!
Happy Friday Night In,
Please share a little about yourselves!
We’re the merrymaker sisters, Emma and Carla. Authors, Holistic Health Coaches, Paleo Recipe Developers and social media nerds. Two Aussie real life sisters that are fun, vibrant, creative and on a personal mission to make the world a healthier and happier place.
How did your business come about?
We were sick of feeling sick, fed up with counting calories, beyond tired from the guilt we felt after eating, with low self-esteem and terribly confused as to why we felt this way. We were in this obsessive whirlwind of fad diets, quick fixes and negative body image. When we looked around this seemed completely normal, everyone was spinning.
This unhealthy way of living needed to stop, so we searched for something that would work.
Was it that we found paleo, or that paleo found us? We’ll never know but will be forever grateful for what it has brought into our lives. Not only good health but a fire in our tummies (aka passion) to share it with the world!
Choosing to live a paleo lifestyle was one of the best decisions we EVER made. After 2 weeks living paleo we’d never felt better and we knew we were onto something good!
Being the food lovers we always have been, we started to share pictures of our paleo foodie creations to our personal social media accounts and our followers started to grow organically. We then realised we needed a place to document all of our recipes and thoughts so we googled ‘How to start a blog’ (seriously!). We both studied and worked in the Communication industry and were passionate about health and wellbeing and so began The Merrymaker Sisters. We haven’t looked back since and feel truly lucky to have found a career path that makes us happy and gives us a sense of fulfilment. We always say ‘To Merrymake, is to follow your bliss, passion, dream’ and that’s exactly what we’re doing.
The most rewarding part of your job?
We just love the power of social media and the internet! It blows our minds that we can reach people from all over the world. The best, most rewarding part of The Merrymaker Sisters is the beautiful emails and messages we get from our community. To know that our recipe or article has helped someone somehow makes us smile huge. We also love meeting new people and Merrymakers has led us to meet some crazy inspiring people, create great working relationships and friendships.
What haven’t you done yet that you wish you could?
Published a hardcover book! We’d love a hard copy recipe and lifestyle book that sits pretty on everyone’s coffee table!
Favourite place in the world?
Oh we love Greece, the Greek Islands to be specific. Our Dad is Greek and although we didn’t grow up in a typical Greek household we definitely felt at home over there! BUT we are off to New York on official Merrymaker business in September and we have a gut feeling we’re going to fall in love with the city. We also just love our home! We bought a house together in 2013 and it’s the most amazing space with such a warm and creative energy. The door is hot pink, there’s feathers and crystals and we don’t have a TV… lots of merrymaking gets done there!
If you were a spice, which would you be?
We are the combination of cinnamon and paprika a. because they are our most favorite spices b. they make the best seasoning on sweet potato chippies and c. together they seem a little odd but they are amazbites!
5 things you can’t live without?
Definitely Family we are obviously super close as sisters and it’s the same with the rest of our family.
Raw cacao powder, we just love it! Makes the best smoothies and paleo sweet treats.
Wi-fi is definitely on the list when you’re social media nerds like us! Don’t worry… we schedule in tech-free time!
Active wear is one because we live in it and also we don’t want to be naked all the time.
Merrymakers! We just love everything to do with The Merrymaker Sisters and can’t imagine life without it!
If you could choose to eat anything in the world for your next meal, what would it be?
Sweet potato chippies with cinnamon and paprika with delicious paleo dips like guacamole and beetroot, cashew and mint. :Q___ (that is a drool smiley face, one of our oldest merrymaker followers taught us that via Instagram!)
What was for breakfast?
Oooo today we had our delish paleo salted caramel smoothie.
How would you classify your eating style?
When we cook and create recipes we like quick, easy, simple and delish! When we are out we love going to cafes and restaurants where we can eat with our hands and we’re total food swappers. We ALWAYS pick two different meals off the menu and go halves! No food envy here!
Your favourite way to stay active?
This changes so much! The commonality is that whatever fitness activity it is, it has to be fun! At the moment we are really into hiking and yoga. Two months ago we would have said crossfit.
What are your top 3 tips for women looking to try paleo?
1. Don’t be intimidated by the ‘no list’ concentrate on what you can eat and filling your plate with good stuff.
2. Try new food, recipes, paleo websites, cook books, cooking styles and make the whole process fun and enjoyable.
3. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all when it comes to paleo. Find what works for you and what makes you feel good!
What do you wish you knew when starting paleo that you know now?
We could say heaps of stuff like… don’t overdose on nuts or paleo sweet treats are still treats or bacon isn’t the most healthiest of meats! But it’s these ‘mistakes’ and paleo ups and downs that have taught us so much about the food we eat and ourselves.
Your best advice for living a wholesome, healthy lifestyle?
To simply start! Making just a few small changes leads to more changes, then soon enough you’re living a total wholesome, healthy life! It’s amazing how much our lives have changed by simply changing our diets. First we detoxed the negative foods and drinks which led to detoxing negative relationships and activities. We then had more brain space to notice the amazing-ness around us! We now live with gratitude, we are about a billion times more positive, we meditate, we’re even learning about spirituality! If someone told the pre-merrymaker Emma and Carla we’d be like this… we’d NEVER EVER had believed it!
