Friday Night In With Adrian from Fit and Fresh Australia
When I came across Fit and Fresh Australia at a recent event, I was really curious to see what they had to offer. So I contacted Adrian, and within a week I was testing out their meals! I wanted to let you know about these guys as they have a real passion behind what they do. Offering fresh meals delivered for weight loss, simple healthy eating, convenience, vegetarian and paleo diets - they cater for pretty much everyone. The meals delivered fresh are for Newcastle - lucky things. But you can get your hands on their food if you're in the rest of NSW, as they'll deliver them frozen instead. They have quite a large variety of meals and they don't skimp either. You can choose from regular or large sizes for many dishes, and they are big!
These meals in my opinion suit those who want simple, easy to reheat and eat meals that don't contain all the extra additives that other ready made frozen meals contain. You can add your own condiments/seasoning and jazz them up how you please, but for those without the time to prepare and cook real wholefood dishes due to their busy schedules, then these are a great option.
Find out a bit more about Ben and Adrian's story, and see a selection of the meals I got to try below.
Happy Friday Night In!
Tell us a little about yourself…
I'm a 28 year old, Ex soldier who is passionate about changing the way the world eats. With my brother as my partner, I am attempting to be an entrepreneur along the way.
Growing up, both Ben, our sister Katie and I were all passionate about health and fitness. Katie went off to Uni to become a sport scientist when I joined the army.
After tours of East Timor and Afghanistan I came home to the realization that Australia and the Western world is getting fat. We were eating all the wrong foods, in all the wrong quantities and essentially eating ourselves to death.
Katie passed away in 2011 after a 6 month fight with cervical cancer. This saw me leave the army and come back to Newcastle to be with the family.
The loss of our sister brought Ben and I closer together and became a motivating factor in the opening of Fit and Fresh.
We now spend half our time running the business and the other half researching nutrition and finding new ways to healthy living information out to the public.
The most rewarding part of your job?
When you get customers coming into the shop or calling up just because they want to tell you how our information or our meals have changed their lives. Whether they have lost weight or have more energy or are feeling happier (generally all of the above) it's an amazing feeling.
What haven’t you done yet that you wish you could?
My next major goal is to set up a not for profit adventure company. Using the money to fund research in to the psychological impact of dietary changes. Focusing on veterans with PSTD.
Favourite place in the world?
Switzerland… I’m half Swiss. Perfect snow, friendly people, relaxed lifestyle.. Its like the Australia of Europe.
If you were a spice, which would you be?
Turmeric…. Rough and grubby but full of goodness.
5 things you can’t live without?
Family – mates included
And butter – grass fed of course
If you could choose to eat anything in the world for your next meal, what would it be?
3 poached egg, 3 bacon, 3 serves of garlic butter wilted spinach. Heaven.
What was for breakfast?
3 poached egg, 3 bacon, 3 serves of garlic butter wilted spinach. : )
How would you classify your eating style?
Strict paleo moving into a ketosis. I usually eat a Paleo diet without worrying about portions or measurements but I am in the early stages of a personal Keto experiment (coming soon to Youtube) so I am regulating calorie intake and removing all carbs. And of course increasing the fat.
Your favourite way to stay active?
I write my own training program following a customized adaptation of Mark Sissons primal fitness.
I adopt the principles of crossfit with varied functional movements done at high intensity about 2 times per week. Then do one day of lifting heavy things and try to get one day a week of long slow distance walking.
The later is usually done by hiking through the bush or at the beach. Again this overlaps with keeping up adventures. You have to go on adventures.
Your menu has a large variety of dishes to choose from - pick your 3 favourites!
Pork belly with plum sauce, Salmon fillet with cauliflower rice, and Beef and Kale stir fry with cashews.
Your best advice for living a wholesome, healthy lifestyle?
Cut sugar and grains out of your diet completely.
Get out in the sun for at least ½ hour per day.
Go on adventures.
If you enjoy doing something, do it often.
Common sense tells more truth than any text book. Question everything.
Where do you deliver your meals?
As of this week we have started delivering from Ulladulla, through Sydney then as far north as Kempsey.
We hope to be expand to Brisbane and Melbourne in the coming year then ultimately Australia wide.
