Review: Cornersmith Cafe & Picklery, Marrickville
By Angela Law,
I have been frequenting this place for over a year now and every single time I walk away with a belly full of delicious food, the best coffee in town in my hand and a big fat smile on my face. Whether it is from the aforementioned food, perfect coffee or the kindness shown to me from everyone who works at Cornersmith, I am not sure. To be honest it is probably a combination of all those things. This café truly is one of my ultimate happy places and I think it could easily (and quickly) become one of yours too.
Cornersmith is a sustainable café, and changes their menu according to the produce generously traded by locals each week. You can even check out who brought what on a blackboard inside the cafe. I have never seen the same menu twice and I like it that way. While I never know exactly what I’m gonna get – I know it’ll be good. They make all their own relishes, pickles and preserves as well as house made ricotta and labneh, which are all regular fixtures on the menu.
I will give you a hot tip when it comes to ordering. First you need to take someone with you who doesn’t mind sharing half of their breakfast, then you should choose one sweet and one savoury dish from the menu. Half it with your mate and there you have it – the perfect Cornersmith combo. And if you come with me, you best be willing to share. I promise I will too.
The Low Down:
- Where: 314 Illawarra Road, Marrickville NSW 2204
- Price: Affordable. Dishes are $12-15 and are a hefty size.
The Bottom Line: if you enjoy cafes with just the right amount of hipster, bearded man and ridiculously fresh produce, then this is perfect place for you.
