Easter is fast approaching, and if you’re anything like me, you may want celebrate this special time of year with some delicious, cacao-filled goodness… aka raw chocolate! Not only does it taste fabulous, but it’s made of more nourishing ingredients that will go down a treat. Read on for our take on the best raw chocolate we could find in Australia and beyond!
NB: Raw chocolate is a much more nourishing alternative to your average block of top-deck, but it is still chocolate. Too much of a good thing, healthy or not, isn’t such a good thing. Enjoy as part of a balanced, wholesome diet - whatever that looks like for you.
The Homegrown Hero - Pana Chocolate
Lucky for us Aussies, we have some killer health-food brands leading the way in the creation of quality, raw chocolate - no doubt the name Pana Chocolate springs to mind! It’s suitable for vegans and is tummy friendly, containing no gluten or dairy. The Pana range is also certified organic and uses fair-trade ingredients. And that super cute packaging? You better believe it’s 100% recyclable and earth-friendly.
The base ingredients consist of:
- cacao solids
- virgin cacao butter
- dark agave nectar
- raw cacao powder
- virgin coconut oil
- wild carob
- pure himalayan crystal salt
Sour Cherry and Vanilla
Opening up a block of Pana Chocolate is like opening a beautifully wrapped Christmas present - the outside is almost as good as the inside! The consistency of Pana Chocolate is distinctly different to that of other raw chocolate varieties. It’s a lot more fudgy, giving it a uniquely homemade taste and feel. The tart pop of fruit in the Sour Cherry and Vanilla is a nice surprise, but not too overpowering, and the 60% Cacao is every chocolate lovers dream, rich and intense.
Smooth tasting and easy on the palate; it’s almost as if you can taste each different ingredient. Take your time with this one - good chocolate deserves to be smelled, touched, tasted and savoured!
At $6.90 for a 45g packet, it sure ain’t cheap. But hey, you get what you pay for. And you’ll find that a square or two is all you need to feel satisfied. Also keep in mind that these little beauties are made by hand.
I’ve got one word for you: decadent. Taste, touch, smell, feel… everything about this chocolate is luxurious! Pana Chocolate is quite intense, with a strong and lingering (but not bitter) flavour of raw cacao. Creator Pana Barbounis (aka Melbournian Willy Wonker) has struck a perfect balance between the sweetness of the agave and the bitterness of the cacao. His chocolate will convert even the most skeptical of your friends and family members. Trust me, I can speak from experience.

The Exotic Foreigner - OmBar
If you can cross Loving Earth and Pana Chocolate off your list, let us introduce to you the latest raw choccy block to hit the Aussie scene, all the way from the motherland! Say hello to OmBar. As the saying goes… last but certainly not least! The OmBar range is raw, organic, antioxidant-rich and boasts an ingredient-list that doesn’t rival the word count of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ombar creations are not only raw, they’re also 100% sustainable, ethical and jam-packed with live cultures! Tummy-friendly chocolate? How good is that?! Needless to say, this stuff is seriously high vibe chocolate.
Read on for a full low-down of every flavour available in Australia. It might make the decision-making process a little bit easier… Or not.
The base ingredients consist of:
- cacao mass
- coconut sugar
- cacao butter
- coconut cream (only in Coconut 60% and Coco Mylk)
- freeze-dried fruits
- live cultures
Coconut 60%: Creamy and dreamy, but not too sweet.
Coco Mylk: Coconut is the real star of this bar. Sweeter than the Coconut 60%, but also less chocolatey.
Dark 72%: The most intense in the range. Good for those who like it strong and dark.
Acai & Blueberry: Very subtle in flavour, perhaps a little too subtle. A darker variety.
Goji Berry: The addition of whole gojis and goji powder gives this bar a smooth taste and a unique flavour. It’s a winner!
Cranberry and Mandarin: The flavour is subtle at first but certainly kicks in at the end. We likey!
With a unique range of flavours and intensities, there is an Ombar to suit every raw chocolate-eater. These bars are more akin to conventional chocolate in texture and are neither too buttery nor too grainy, as some raw chocolate brands are. The size of the bars is small (35g) but is nicely divided into 7 bite-size segments, perfectly portioned and perfect for sharing! And we must make an honourable mention to those beneficial live cultures. Probiotic chocolate? Genius!
The Acai and Blueberry is very subtle, so don’t expect a big pop of flavour, but it’s delicious nonetheless! Sadly, Ombar is hard to come by in Australia at the moment, so be sure to enter our giveaway on Instagram to win the chance to try some (@thebodydietetics)!
Need to know: This yummy chocolate is made by the Ombar team with 100% organic, sustainable and ethical ingredients in a small factory in Cambridge, England.
