5 reasons why your body needs a beach holiday!
Why the beach is more than just an indulgent location.
The beach provides several nutrients that are essential for our overall wellbeing. But let’s face it, taking a break from work and heading on a beach holiday can seem unnecessary and overindulgent during the cooler weather months (especially in cold Melbourne where I am from). Though here are some wonderful reasons why taking a beach holiday is actually a great idea!
Salt is a natural exfoliator: The salt in sea water gently acts to remove all the dead skin cells. This allows the skin to feel smooth and springy, absorbing more nutrients and moisture that the body needs, keeping the skin looking youthful and healthy. Several clinical studies have found sodium to increase fibrillin and collagen-1 anti-ageing biomarkers, reduce wrinkle depth and skin roughness. Say no to creams and yes to the beach I say!
Relaxation: The act of lying on the beach, listening to the waves and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life has been found to be very effective in promoting relaxation and several other health benefits. Reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension and breathing rate as well as increasing blood flow to the muscles are just some of the positive health benefits that come with a beach holiday. These attributes lead to better sleep, reduced anxiety and depression, increased immunity and anti-ageing outcomes.
Vitamin D: This fat soluble vitamin is mostly delivered to us through sunshine rays, with only minimal amounts being found naturally in foods. Companies now commonly supplement food products (mainly milk and breakfast cereals) with vitamin D to increase our intake. However synthetic vitamins and minerals will never be as effective in absorption as the true, natural sources. Studies show that there can be a 100-1000IU/d difference in vitamin D absorption depending on skin type when at the beach compared to when not on vacation. (1 tablet/ drop usually = 1000IU in supplements). Vitamin D is essential in preventing depression and anxiety as well as several other non-communicable diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, rickets, promoting bone and muscle strength.
Magnesium: Ocean water is rich in magnesium and is a great, natural source of this essential mineral. Magnesium helps increase our energy, reduce anxiety and tension as well as help reduce future risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and infertility.
Great source of exercise: Swimming is one of the best full body workouts you can do! Not only is it low impact (meaning it’s a great way to get some exercise when needing to rehabilitate bone and muscle injuries) but it uses a whole heap of energy! The gesture of needing to keep your body afloat stimulates several muscles in your body to activate. Meaning it’s also a fantastic way to prevent future weight gain/ help with weight maintenance or promote weight loss.
So no need to feel guilty anymore! Take a break and make time for you! Remember it is all about moderation!
