Review: Aboutlife at Bondi Junction - a health foodie's paradise
Sydney is full of health food stores and Bondi Junction is one of the hotspots in the city if you are a lover of organic produce and staples. But Aboutlife is more than just your average health food store. It is a mecca for every health foodie out there and should not be missed.
It’s a health food supermarket with a hot food bar, a café and an organic drug store all at the same time. The crowd is mixed: you’ll see yoga mummies, students, cross-fit junkies and even suit-wearers. All filling up their baskets with fresh produce, bulk staples (frozen fruit and vegetables and freshly ground nut butter from the machine), healthy ready-made deli foods (lasagne, pasta, dips and sauces), protein bars and powders, organic beauty products, and other organic essentials. There is literally nothing you won’t find in this busy little wholefoods paradise. Once you have spent a considerable amount of time browsing the high shelves, fully packed with whatever your health foodie heart desires, the café and hot food bar next door will make sure to bring your energy levels back up. The food can be enjoyed either in the small seating area inside or at one of the sunny tables out front.
Aboutlife’s food bar is a blessing for those busy working bees, who do not have time to whip up a meal after work but also don’t want to go out and spend restaurant-prices for their meal. You can choose between different box sizes (small at $6.50 to $14.90 for the biggest) and pile up the goodness to the top of your box. As only size not weight matters here, there will be no bad surprises at the cashier. On offer are fresh salads, curries, vegan lasagne, sauerkraut and kimchi but also sweet option such as chia pudding, vegan chocolate mousse etc.
Slightly more expensive, but still within standard prices for the suburb, are the meals offered by the adjoined café. Breakfast is served even for the laziest morning grouches: until 3 pm. Alongside the usual eggs on toast with sides of your choice there are plenty of options to please any dietary requirement out there. If you are a paleo–enthusiast you will be one happy caveman browsing through the menu. Don’t miss the famous paleo breakfast superhash (kale and sweet potato superhash topped with poached eggs, spinach and bacon $15.90) or the banana and sweet potato hot cakes ($14.90). Grain-eaters and vegans will find options such as vegan scrambled caulibowl ($14.90) and coconut quinoa porridge ($11.50).
The lunch menu takes wholefoods to another level: burritos, pulled pork, tuna melt and burgers – all with a healthy twist (paleo and vegan version available). Only got time for a drink? Try one of their many juices, smoothies, teas and coffees. A special treat are the house-made chais – make your pick between spicy ginger or raw cacao. If your sweet tooth is itching there are plenty of (raw) vegan or paleo treats to choose from behind a glass counter.
Not just one…
Aboutlife’s popularity amongst Sydney’s health foodies is undeniable. And so five different locations were opened throughout the city since 1996. In addition to the one in Bondi Junction, shops can be found in Surry Hills, Rozelle, Double Bay and Cammeray. All have a similar set-up with a café included in each store.
