Here are 5 reasons why we’re loving it!
Porridge provides slow release energy
Regardless of the base you use, the big bowl of warmth will generally have a low Glycaemic Index, meaning that your body will digest it slowly, leaving you feeling fuller for longer. Porridge also provide a gradual release of energy and keeps your blood sugar levels stable- allowing you to eat less without feeling those dreaded hunger pangs!
It has an impressive nutrient profile
Macronutrients: they are a great source of carbohydrates and are high in protein. Protein is a major functional component of the cells that make up our body and is needed for growth and repair- so its best to start sourcing it at breakfast.
Micronutrients: porridge, made with whole grain oats, provides us with essential nutrients including; zinc, iron magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, antioxidants and phytochemicals- boosting our immune system and fighting off infections.
Porridge is high in fibre
The whole grains used in porridge are a source of both soluble and insoluble fibre, regular consumption will help improve bowel function by increasing the bulk of the stools and softening the bowl. Not only does the high fibre content improve digestion, but it may also reduce high blood cholesterol and prevent heart disease.
It’s good for a hangover
Hangovers are the result of the poisonous effects of toxins in alcohol; oats neutralise acidity levels in the body and help to absorb toxins, thus reducing the effects of a hangover!
Porridge literally makes us happy
Porridge is a good source of vitamin B6, which helps the body to produce the hormone serotonin. High levels of serotonin are associated with feeling of wellbeing and happiness; the hormone also helps to regulate mood and aids restful slumber.
