A Supplement For Fructose Malabsorption? Keep Your Eye On Xylose Isomerase!
You're limiting your fruit, you cut out certain vegetables, you've said goodbye to regular bread, but from time to time you just want to go out to lunch and feel like a normal person. I get it, believe me, I do!
No fruit salad, no garlic pasta, no bread and dips, no raw desserts (hello post-date bloat!). Yep - fructose isn't just in fruit. Fructans, the oligosaccharide (let's call them 'savoury' versions of frucose) are present in vegetables, grains, beans and more.
Fructose malabsorption can cause symptoms of stomach bloating, wind, stomach pain, loose bowel motions and / or constipation if the diet is not well planned.
But! There may be an exciting new supplement in the works. While there's nothing yet readily available in Australia. 88 Health Products in the US, have just launched an enzyme supplement called FructosAid, containing xylose isomerase. Similar to Xylosolv in Europe.
What's it made from?
Xylose isomerase is an enzyme that comes from these bacterial sources:
- Actinoplanes missouriensis
- Bacillus coagulans
- Microbacterium arborescens
- Streptomyces olivaceus
- Streptomyces olivochromogenes
- Streptomyces murinus
- Streptomyces rubiginosus
While the ultimate treatment is still dietary limitation of fructose, a study involving 65 people saw the use of xylose isomerase significantly improve their nausea and abdominal pain!
According to the Xylosolv website, 1-2 capsules must be consumed with liquid prior to fructose-containing meals up to 3 times daily.
How much is it?
60 capsules will set a person in Europe back roughly $74 AUD.
That's certainly something I wouldn't want to rely on daily. But by the sounds of it so far, it's set to make dinner with friends, work lunches, and road trips a lot less uncomfortable for us 'fructmal' folk :)
